The parents of my 2x great-grandfather, John DUNBAR, were David DUNBAR and Isabella FLOCKHART.
David DUNBAR was born 25 November 1841 in Fettercairn, Kincardineshire, Scotland, to John DUNBAR & Mary PATERSON. David had three full siblings: Anne Paterson (1836-?), Jean (1844-1925) and William (1844-?); as well as two half siblings from his mother’s earlier marriage: Helen BRUCE (1828-1904) and George BRUCE (1830-?).
On 14 July 1869, he married Isabella FLOCKHART at her home, 3 Tobago Street in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. His occupation at the time is listed as “Confectioner’s Traveller”.
Isabella FLOCKHART was born in late 1848 in Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland, to Andrew FLOCKHART & Jane SCOBBIE (sometimes spelled SCOBIE). She may have had two sisters: Jane, born about 1843, and Jean, born about 1847. Unfortunately none of the children’s births were registered, so they first appear in the 1851 Scotland Census, by which time their mother was dead and the family had moved in with Isabella’s paternal grandparents.
David and Isabella had only one child, their son John in 1869. Sadly, David died five years later, on 10 December 1874 in Edinburgh. Isabella remarried in 1878 to John WISHART, and in 1881 was working as the Matron of a Servants Home in Edinburgh, while her husband John was a leather currier.
Isabella & John moved around after that – 1891 saw them in Monifieth, Angus, but by 1901 they were living in Walsall, Staffordshire, England. John died here in 1921, and Isabella returned to her native Auchterarder, where she died on 8 July 1928 of cardiac failure.
